Bread and Circuses

Went for a lovely bike ride and long walk yesterday evening. The weather was perfect. The sun was shining and a cool breeze made the heat tolerable. The flowers were in full bloom and everything was so verdant and lush. I was thankful to live in such a beautiful city.

Then I nearly plowed into a large group of people standing around (in eerie silence) looking at their phones… on a BIKE PATH (where they could be hit any moment by an unsuspecting rider). It was like something out of a sci-fi movie. Later, we walked through Memorial Park and there was a large crowd milling around the memorial plinth. Doug and I thought perhaps it was some kind of ceremony for fallen soldiers or something, and we thought we should pay our respects. But it wasn’t. It was a game of Pokemon Go… at a war memorial.

LOOK UP! There's a real world out there!

“Bread and circuses” identifies the only remaining cares of a populace that no longer cares for its historical birthright of political involvement. Roman politicians passed laws in 140 B.C. to keep the votes of poorer citizens, by introducing a grain dole: giving out cheap food and entertainment (the games), "bread and circuses", became the most effective way to rise to power.

OH… penny drops…
